The Rosario Red

25/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Walking down from a days hiking to the top of El Chaltén in Patagonian, Argentina I had one if those moments that you just don’t expect or can believe. I’d walked up there in my Nottingham Forest shirt, not sure why I’d put it on that morning – I just had. The trek had been hard going, particularly towards the top but we were close to getting back and I was looking forward to some dinner and obviously a beer. […]

Ice ice baby

20/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Never have I seen something that looks (and sounds) like this. A gigantic slug of ice, which makes the huge valley it occupies look small and the ice trekkers on it like ants. When I first saw it emerge from behind a twisty Ruta 11 turn, I nearly drove off the road. It’s spectacular. I imagine a few people are reading that introduction and thinking, “come on Marco, it’s a big ice cube – it can’t be all that”. Well […]

Old Smokey

20/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Next stop on the roller coast of astonishing Southern Patagonian sights it was time to head to the iconic ‘smokey mountain’; Fitz Roy. Unfortunately, we had no idea whether it was smokey or not. We arrived to thick cloud covering the range and after we nipped to the tourist office it began to rain, and rain, and rain. Abysmal. Undeterred we pitched up at a quirky French run campsite on the north side of the mountain and sat it out. […]

“We argue, we don’t fight”

17/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Road Music – Disc#4 If You Wait by London Grammar We opened our camper van doors to a morning of sun, a cold breeze and pink flamingos! The latter were taking breakfast on Laguna Nimez, the shores of which had been our home for the night. After lunch we headed out of El Calafate on Ruta 11 on a mission to see some bloody big ice in the form of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Given our destination I thought we […]

A window of opportunity

15/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

As we summited the main view-point of Torres Del Paine with virtually clear blue skies and bright sunshine we realised how lucky we had been. Before our arrival the park had been closed due to horrendous conditions on the mountain passes and as it transpired would close again 3 days later due to heavy snow. With little planning, and without really knowing, we had a window of opportunity and we made the most of it. With its unmistakable cathedral-like spires, […]

“Tell me lies… Tell me sweet little lies”

13/04/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Road Music – Disc#3 Greatest Hits by Fleetwood Mac. We had already seen some amazing wildness in Southern Patagonia but it was about to get really special as we headed out of Puerto Natales on Ruta 9 – destination Torres Del Paine. As we departed, the new year excitement and an anticipation of life to come on the road caused me to flick through my iPhone to choose some road music. I don’t no why but my finger landed on […]
