Somewhere along Paso Roballos was an animal…

09/06/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Road Music – Disc#6 Animal by Miike Snow When travellers cross from Argentina to Chile at Lago Buenos Aires they mostly seem to take the Chile Chico border point. We went on a detour and were rewarded with the most amazingly remote border crossing – Paso Roballos – hereafter to be known by us as Paso Robbo!!! With Miike Snow’s debut album – Animal – blaring out we headed south out of Los Antiguos on a minor road that quickly […]

New Strings

03/06/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

If your looking for an example of how deciding to go travelling can lead to trying your luck and perhaps finding a new string to your bow, this is it. Lollapalooza Music Festival 2014 – Santiago, Chile. I somehow ended up writing music reviews on behalf of the English speaking publication I Love Chile. Starting with the sideshow gig of fellow Nottingham lad Jake Bugg and then moving on to Lorde and Axwell’s performances at the main Lollapalooza festival. I […]

Gauchos, booze and err… Cherries

01/06/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

We raced up Ruta 40 like mad men to the southern shores of Lago Buenos Aires to join the annual Cherry Festival, held at the apparently sleepy border town of Los Antiguos. To be honest I’m not sure what we expected but it turned out the festival is more about booze and gaucho rodeo than cherries. We arrived in the early evening to a small town literally stretching at the seams. The municipal and makeshift campsites were already rammed full […]

Cueva de las Manos

29/05/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

On our way along Ruta 40 north of Bajo Caracoles (great name) we called into see the millenniums old Cueva de las Manos. An intriguing spectacle of art produced over centuries by the indigenous peoples of these lands. Using pigments taken from the rocks of the surrounding valleys, a colour powder was mixed and blown over hands of the tribe to give permanent and somewhat haunting inscription of their existence. Viewing this galley formed over tens of thousands of years, […]

Somewhere Along the Forty

28/05/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Ruta 40, the forty, is dramatic – that’s an understatement if ever there was one. Stretching out to mirages, cutting through deepest Patagonia, dragging the snow capped Andes towards us. Like a cranky old man, it’s tarmac turns to wash board gravel at a drop of a hat, rerouted sections leave signs abandoned in the middle of the desert and getting fuel and water can be tricky. It’s entertaining too, signed junctions do their best to send you astray and […]

“North to South”

27/05/2014 by Footsteps of a Tree

Road Music – Disc#5 Silent Alarm Remixed by Bloc Party With our legs aching and our bellies rumbling after a long day hiking, we jumped in the van and headed out of El Chaltén on Ruta 23. It was around 6pm and as we drove out the town our mirrors were quickly filled with a beautiful late day vista of Fitz Roy, resisting being wrapped in the advancing night clouds it wanted to salute our departure. As we headed east […]
